UNSC VETO Reform
Updated: May 29, 2022

Firstly it is important to know WHAT IS UNSC? It is the United Nations Security Council. It works for the maintenance of international peace and security. And what is reform? Well, reform means to make changes so as to improve it. Coming to VETO power, any time one of the Security Council's five veto-wielding permanent members -- China, France, Russia, the U.S., and the U.K. -- use that power to block a resolution in the U.N.'s most powerful body it will require a meeting of the General Assembly, where all U.N. members will be able to voice their views. WHAT DID UNSC MAKE REFORMS ABOUT? Reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) encompasses five key issues: categories of membership, the question of the veto held by the five permanent members, regional representation, the size of an enlarged Council and its working methods, and the Security Council-General Assembly relationship. The Member States, regional groups, and other Member State interest groupings developed different positions and proposals on how to move forward on this contested issue. The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution requiring P5 members to justify their use of veto powers. India's representative criticized the reform as a 'take it or leave it' offer that ignores the root problems at the UN. WHY IS UNSC REFORMING? The UNSC has to date made 0 efforts to change or evolve. The West now claims that it brought a proposal to change it. According to this proposal, ALL COUNTRIES having VETO power will have to justify their use. The question that stands here is the need to justify it, They impose self-doubt while doing this, taking an example, the West passed several resolutions during Russia’s attack. But all of them were VETOed by Russia without justification. The exact count of vetos used by RUSSIA AND USSR are 143. This has always been the privilege of P-5. Now talking about the effect and power of this reform, About 100 countries co-sponsor this resolution. However, it is pointless. The real reason behind this reform and the main aim of the west is to try and humiliate Russia. This resolution is all about politics. This is why countries like India and Brazil have criticized it.
